Preparing For Battle
This article has been posted to help give the prospective Player a better understanding for the game play in Civil War: War Between the States. The ways in which things are done in this example are only a small example of the many ways the game can be controlled and played. ENJOY!
For this example we will focus on a small skirmish that is underway on the farm fields of Tennessee. We have chosen to be the North and at present we are preparing to mount an offensive to take out a southern entrenchment near the town of Farmersville.
You start off by selecting a group of units / the officer in charge of those units and then selecting where you want them to go. Your Units begin to move out. As you wait for them to get to their location it gives you a chance to go to a nearby town and check on getting some supplies in case this “little” skirmish turns out to be a bit more than expected. Instead of scrolling to the nearest town you use a drop down list of all the states and towns to more quickly find it and go to it. You select on the Supply Depot and check on the icon to send supplies through this depot. As the supplies load you have time to take a handful of the militia that are in the town and set up a defensive. You select the small group of militia that are there and after selecting a location to entrench, your Units begin working on an entrenchment just outside of town. You use a quick key to quickly recheck on your men and see how they are doing. They are getting closer to where you think the enemy is so you send out a group of Cavalry, by using “waypoints” to direct your units without you having to be there to guide them, to check around. You go back over to the town to check on the progress, the entrenchment is going good and the supply wagons are almost done loading. You go ahead and select the supply depot and set a waypoint for where the supplies are to go. You select the group of Units you have marching against the enemy. This way when the supplies come out they will automatically go his direction. Some enemy units have appeared on your mini map that the cavalry must be near so you quickly click on the mini map to go there and what do you see but the start of a massive build up. What you thought was going to be just a small skirmish doesn’t look that way anymore. In fact, you only have two brigades that are not very experienced. Your best bet is to find a spot on the terrain that would make for a good defensive. Once found you begin entrenching and setting up your field cannons and mortars. You head back to the nearby town and expand the defensive measures incase they break through your two brigades. Knowing that this will not be enough men you head to the nearest big city where a Core of Units have been commissioned. You quickly select these men and send them to the rail station to load up and move down south in hopes they will reach the town in time.
You make your way back to your brigades who have dug in and are ready to defend their ground. To help buy you some more time you move your Cavalry into position near where you think the Enemy will come. They dismount and set up a skirmish line to help buy you some time as well as to lead the enemy to your defensive setup. One of the Units in your brigade is a sniper Unit so you ungroup him from the whole and take him into the woods on the east flank. You set him in the thick of all the trees so the enemy won’t be able to see very easily. Now why take him over there? It will give you a better opportunity to try and take out their commanding officers during the battle and possible give you an advantage. Slim to none, you need what ever you can get. You go back to your Cavalry and zoom out on the view to watch for the enemy. Before you know it there they are… a full division of battle ready men. You take a deep breath, dig your feet into the ground and get ready for a fight.
Next Time, positioning your men and holding your ground will be the topic of choice.
